What kind of world do you want to be living in?
Do you want to live in a world where children are safe to play outside? Where food is safe to eat and air is safe to breathe? Where you are free to be yourself without government interference? Where people generally treat each other with kindness, dignity and respect? Where, with hard work & perseverance, there is maybe even the hope for a better future?
Or do you want to live in a world where you are forced to be afraid, every minute of every day, about Every. Damn. Thing?
I know what kind of world I want to live in. I dream of a future where all the people of the world live in harmony not only with each other but also with every other living thing. I dream of cities teeming with life: fruiting plants everywhere offering up their bounty for people to eat and wild creatures providing endless sources of education and entertainment. All tended by the community, as a sensible conservative investment in the health of the community.
I dream of a future in which we have an entirely different conception of “wealth”. A future where caring for each other, and the people who do that caring, are rewarded and honored. And I don’t mean in the lip service ‘send them a card on mother’s day’ way we have now, but in a REAL way, with actual supports for actual needs like housing and healthcare. You want, for instance, more women to choose to devote themselves to motherhood? How about paying mothers an actual wage then? If we think this work is so valuable (and I believe it IS) then we as a society should put our money where our mouths are.
Mothers are not the only caregivers out there though. I dream of a future where we have built an entire culture of caring. A culture of caring for each other, a culture of caring for the land, a culture even of caring for our culture. Many, many different kinds of people can be important in this kind of world: Gardeners, Nurses, Firefighters, Teachers, and yes, even Politicians to name just a few.
The world we live in is determined by the choices we make, from the ballot box to the cash register. And while I do believe the situation is dire I also believe it is not hopeless. Personally I struggle with anxiety (putting it mildly lol) and tend to dwell on the negative stories I see in the news. But here at LoveGardenLife.com I want to try and highlight that there are also a LOT of people doing seriously awesome things to make the world a better place. There’s no way I could possibly list them all in one blog post; obviously it’s a topic I will want to return to again and again. So for now here are just a few of them:
